About the breed

Sealyham is the name of an estate in Wales / Pembrokeshire, where the hunting eager captain John Tucker Edwardes lived. I 1840 Capt. Edwardes chose to retire solely to pay tribute to his passion - the pursuit of primarily badger and otter.
Since none of his former dogs fulfilled his expectations, he decided to make his own breed. As a basis for his breeding he imported white wire-haired Basset, which he crossed the Dandie Dinmont and also fox terrier and a small bull terrier type - Cheshire terrier.
He did well, and in no time his kennel had more than 100 dogs. He selected very strictly, if one of his dogs during tests did not show enough courage and endurance, the dogs were either placed with friends or killed. In this way Capt. Edwardes and later breeders succeeded to breed a different hunting dog.
”Edwardes-terrier " was quickly known in England, and in 1911 the English kennel club approved the breed under the name Sealyham terrier. From being a passionate hunter the Sealyham terrier is now a very sociable pet dog with slightly longer hair.
How is a Sealyham?
As many of the other terrier breeds the Sealyham Terrier over the years has become unemployed. The hunting instinct has been dampened tremendously, and now it is a joyful and uncomplicated companion dog.
Sealyham terrier is a strong, harmonious built dog with a powerful, lively movement and self-assured charisma with great a sense of humor. Because of a high situational feeling, it is very good with children.
Yet a Sealy, as all other terriers, should be trained consistently.
It is therefore obvious that a dog with so much character and such a great personality also be brought up fondly, but with a firm and consistent hand. The voice must be the tool to build a perfect companionship.
